When Should I Book My Senior Photos?

Tips for Senior Portraits in Washington & Oregon

One of the most common questions I get is: When should I book my senior photos?

When I talk about booking your senior portraits, I don’t mean the actual date of the photo session; I’m talking about when you should reach out to a photographer to reserve your spot on their calendar.

The best time to do that is early in the year (January through March) before your graduation year. For example, if you’re graduating in 2026, you’ll want to start contacting photographers at the beginning of 2025 to secure your session.

Keep in mind that yearbook photo deadlines vary by school, with some as early as September at the start of your senior year. Because of this, senior photo sessions typically run from early spring to late fall in the Pacific Northwest. That’s why it’s so important to get on a photographer’s calendar early so you can secure the best time that fits your schedule and deadlines.

Why Book Ahead?

Booking ahead is the best way to make sure your senior session turns out exactly how you imagined! Many high school seniors don’t realize that top photographers can be booked anywhere from a few months up to a year in advance, so planning ahead is key.

Sought-After Months

The longer you wait to book your senior portraits, the more likely the most popular months for photo shoots will be fully booked. As a Vancouver, Washington based portrait photographer, I know the prime outdoor senior portrait season runs from June through mid-October when the chances of rain are low. It’s a short window, and those session dates fill up quickly.

Time to Plan

Booking early not only secures your session date but also gives us time to plan every detail. I always offer a Session Consultation where we discuss your vision and ideas so you feel confident and prepared. Planning ahead means no last-minute stress, like worrying if your dream dress will arrive on time, and ensures your session reflects your unique style.

Final Thoughts

The question, “When should I book my senior photos?” might seem simple, but the answer plays a big role in how smoothly your senior portrait experience goes. Booking ahead gives you peace of mind knowing you’re on your photographer’s calendar for the date you want and plenty of extra time to plan all the little details that will make your session truly special!
